Reason for Optimism

“Any believing Latter-day Saint is an optimist about what lies ahead for him or her, however difficult the present may be. We believe that through living the gospel of Jesus Christ we can become like the Savior, who is perfect.”

Missionary challenge check

This is a check point for your missionary challenge goal of finding and showing 6 of your friends the challenge video each week. Monday will be the 3rd video and your third friend. Remember to "pray always" for inspiration to who is ready to hear the message of "Good News".

Speaking of "Good News," Easter is only a little more than two months away. What better way to celebrate Christ's birth (April 6th) and Resurrection/ Easter (April 4th) than a baptism?!

The Strength of Youth

“Living the standards set in For the Strength of Youth will make you feel good about yourself. Write those standards into your heart and mind, and live accordingly. Compare each of those standards with where you are today. Listen to the Spirit, who will teach you what you need to do to become more like Jesus.”

Information on the Portland Temple: http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/portland/

Temples

Temples are literally houses of the Lord. They are holy places of worship where individuals make sacred covenants with God. Because making covenants with God is such a solemn responsibility, individuals cannot enter the temple to receive their endowments or be sealed in marriage for eternity until they have fully prepared themselves and been members of the Church for at least a year. Throughout history, the Lord has commanded His people to build temples. The Church is working to build temples all over the world to make temple blessings more available for a greater number of Heavenly Father's children.

Places of Learning

Temples are places of learning. Their principal purpose is to provide ordinances necessary for the children of God to enable them to return to dwell with Him. Temple ordinances lead to the greatest blessings available through theAtonement of Jesus Christ. Everything in the Church—the meetings and activities, the missionary efforts, the lessons taught and the hymns—all lead to the work done in holy temples.

One ordinance received in the temple is called the endowment. The word endowment means "gift," and the temple endowment truly is a gift from God. The ordinance consists of a series of instructions and includes covenants to live righteously and follow the requirements of the gospel. The endowment focuses on the Savior, His role in Heavenly Father's plan, and the personal commitment of each member to follow Him.

Another temple ordinance is celestial marriage. In this ordinance husband and wife are sealed to one another for eternity. A sealing performed in the temple continues forever if the husband and wife are faithful to the covenants they make.

Children born to parents who have been sealed in the temple are born in the covenant. These children automatically become part of an eternal family. Children who are not born in the covenant can also become part of an eternal family once their natural or adoptive parents have been sealed to one another. The ordinance of sealing children to parents is performed in the temple.

People who have died without these essential gospel ordinances may receive those ordinances through the work done in temples. Acting in behalf of ancestors and others who have died, Church members are baptized and confirmed, receive the endowment, and participate in the sealings of husband to wife and children to parents.

Those who enter the temple must be worthy, which means that they keep the commandments and are prepared to make and keep sacred temple covenants. In two interviews—one with a member of a bishopric or a branch president and another with a member of a stake presidency or a mission president—Church members certify their worthiness to enter the temple. In these interviews, the priesthood leader asks about the individual's personal conduct and worthiness. Those who are worthy receive a temple recommend, which allows them to enter the temple.

Temple Clothing

When individuals go to the temple, they should wear their best clothing, as they do when they attend church. When they are inside the temple, they exchange their clothing for the white clothing of the temple. This change of clothing takes place in a dressing room, where each person uses a locker and a private dressing space. In the temple, modesty is carefully maintained.

As individuals put their clothing in the locker, they can leave all their worldly distractions behind. Dressed in white, they can feel a oneness and a sense of equality with others in the temple, for everyone around them is similarly dressed.

Wearing the Temple Garment

Once people are endowed, they have the blessing of wearing the temple garment throughout their lives. They are obligated to wear it according to the instructions given in the endowment. Those who have been endowed in the temple must remember that the blessings that are related to this sacred privilege depend on their worthiness and their faithfulness in keeping temple covenants.

The garment provides a constant reminder of the covenants made in the temple. The garment should be treated with respect at all times. It should not be exposed to the view of those who do not understand its significance, and it should not be adjusted to accommodate different styles of clothing. When worn properly, the garment provides protection against temptation and evil. Wearing the garment is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.

Blessings from Attending the Temple

In addition to being a place where sacred priesthood ordinances are performed, the temple is a place of peace andrevelation. It is a place where spiritual guidance can be received for crucial decisions or concerns.

The Lord blesses those who attend to the sacred ordinance work in the temple. And the blessings He gives will not be limited to the time spent in the temple. Those who do temple work will be blessed in all aspects of their lives. Their labors in the temple will strengthen them and refine them spiritually.

The Vision of the Tree of Life: 1 Nephi Ch. 8, Ch 11, Ch. 15:21-36

20 JAN 2010

Modesty

“Many of you are trying too hard to be unique in your dress and grooming to attract what the Lord would consider the wrong kind of attention. In the Book of Mormon story of the tree of life, it was the people whose ‘manner of dress was exceedingly fine’ who mocked those who partook of the fruit of the tree. It is sobering to realize that the fashion-conscious mockers in the great and spacious building were responsible for embarrassing many, and those who were ashamed ‘fell away into forbidden paths and were lost’ (1 Nephi 8:27–28).”

Missionary challenge #1

Below is a very neat site that makes sharing the gospel simple. There are short videos that explain some basics about our church.

We will attach one a week and provide you with some more information to share. Then the rest is up to you. We challenge you to share each video with at least one of your friends within the week.

There are currently 5 videos with a 6th on it's way. Please prayerfully select 6 friends with whom you would like to share the gospel in the next 6 weeks. If your friends show more interest please connect them with the missionaries, invite them to an activity/church/FHE/etc. or anything else the you feel prompted to do as a follow up.

Heavenly Father will help you if you prayerfully and sincerely ask for his help. Let's help be part of the missionary effort: every member a missionary- remember the more members there are, the more friends you have to hang out with a church activities :D

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon serves as another testament of Jesus Christ and confirms the truths found in the Holy Bible. The Book of Mormon does not replace the Bible; rather they are companion works that together teach about God and Jesus Christ.

Joseph Smith, through God's inspiration, translated the Book of Mormon from ancient records written on gold plates and taught that it is "the keystone of our religion."

Both volumes of scripture are a compilation of teachings as recorded by ancient prophets. While the Bible details events in the eastern hemisphere, the Book of Mormon documents the lives of the inhabitants of the Americas, primarily from approximately 600 B.C. through A.D. 421.

How can reading the Book of Mormon affect my life?

The purpose of the Book of Mormon is to testify that Jesus is the Savior of the world. Church leaders teach that reading the Book of Mormon helps readers build a stronger relationship with God.

As you read the Book of Mormon, you will find greater strength to resist temptation and an increased desire and ability to follow Jesus Christ.

How can I know for myself that the Book of Mormon is true?

A passage in the Book of Mormon invites the reader to ponder its message and then, through prayer, ask God the Father, in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, if the book is true. Readers are promised that when they ask with faith, the Holy Ghost will testify to them of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

This is an awesome article from the Ensign that is a collection of church leader's testimonies of the Book of Mormon: http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=ae8674536cf0c010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____

Scripture study

Here are some websites to hep you with your new year's resolution of reading your scriptures.

Memorizing scripture mastery put to music: http://lds.about.com/od/seminary/a/scripture_songs.htm

Here is a chart to mark off the chapters that you have read: http://www.bookofmormonchart.com/

Tips:
  1. Always start with a prayer and end with pondering
  2. You do not always have to read the scriptures cover to cover. Try topical searches by going to the Bible dictionary, Topical guide and Index to find scriptures on something you want to study.
  3. Try a color coding system. Any time you come across a scripture, for example: on Jesus, color it purple: the color of royalty.
  4. Start a scripture journal to write down your prompting and impressions of what you read
  5. LASTLY, Every once in a while read a conference talk instead- it is modern scripture (Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. AND D&C 1: 38 ... Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. )

Prayer

Prayer is an essential part of the day. Hopefully some of you a have made a goal, in your New Year's Resolutions to pray daily. Here are some new Mormon Messages, a Prophet's counsel, scriptures to study, and other resources to help you on your way to a more spiritual YOU.

Prayer

“Simply stated, prayer is communication to Heavenly Father from His sons and daughters on earth. ‘As soon as we learn the true relationship in which we stand toward God (namely, God is our Father, and we are his children), then at once prayer becomes natural and instinctive on our part’ (Bible Dictionary, “Prayer,” 752).
“We are commanded to pray always to the Father in the name of the Son (see 3 Nephi 18:19–20). We are promised that if we pray sincerely for that which is right and good and in accordance with God’s will, we can be blessed, protected, and directed (see 3 Nephi 18:20; D&C 19:38).”

Be Prepared to Bear Testimony

“The opportunity to declare a truth may come when we least expect it. Let us be prepared.”

Got faith?

How cool are you? Will God be able to choose you for something amazing? Are you prepared? Are you ready for something like Zapping your brothers, serving even when it feels like it is costing you everything, or standing up to peer pressure even when it is so hot you can feel it burning you?

Be who you are and LOVE it!

God made us all unique for a purpose. Foreordination means: to be chosen. This means God KNOWS you so well that he has chosen you to do certain tasks at specific times, which is why you had to be born when you were. You always have a choice if you will do what he asks, to perform the service he requests. You were saved for a special reason and you are here on the earth now instead of hundreds of years ago or in the future because YOU add something that NO ONE ELSE CAN. You are special. Embrace your "uniqueness", strive to serve in the best way you can, and ENJOY being YOU!!

Got Gratitude?!

As I kind of revisit the Resolution's post, I apologize in advance for a more personal, pensive and lengthy post than ones done in the past.

Growing up, my wise Father counseled that we pick three goals (like in the video Brand New Year put out by the church): one personal, spiritual and educational. As I no longer go to school or teach (therefore making my educational goal more difficult), I have been contemplating my goals for the year to really iron them out and decide what I need to focus on this year. Though this year my goals all kind of overlap, I thought that I would share one of them. A gratitude journal.
Now I have heard of these before and honestly, they kind of sounded cheesy. However, I felt prompted to share my thoughts with you about why I have chosen this goal. 1st however, let's refer back to the steps I need to take to make sure this goal has the best chance of success.

Step 1 & 2: Write in a gratitude journal each day
Step 3: I will set aside a specific lined notebook journal to write in. I will write 2 things I am grateful for that day (trying to make them different from past entries). I may add pictures, drawings, notes, scripture verses, quotes or other items that represent what I am thankful for.
Step 4: It will sit on my bedside table to write in every night. This way when I wake up I will be reminded to look for the good in the day and at night to write it down.

Now that my Steps are written let's talk about what a gratitude journal really is: It is a place to focus on all the blessings that Heavenly Father has given each of us. Being a human being can be really tough- sickness, rude people, busy schedules, difficult trials, change, etc. Life can be very challenging. However, Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." This journal is a personal record of "Tender Mercies" in your life. Remember do what every works for you- on the computer, a scrapbook, a journal, etc.
Spencer W. Kimball says, "At the Grand Council we also learned the purpose for our progression: to have a fulness of joy. However, we also learned that some would be deceived, choose other paths, and lose their way. We learned that all of us would have trials in our lives: sickness, disappointment, pain, sorrow, and death. But we understood that these would be given to us for our experience and our good (see D&C 122:7). If we allowed them to, these trials would purify us rather than defeat us. They would teach us to have endurance, patience, and charity (see Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball [2006], 15–16).
Trials are hard, but learning from them and getting through them to become the stronger person that Heavenly Father wants us to become is the key. For me writing down what I have learned and the good things in my life will help me on tough days. I will be able to look back and see how far I have come and what Heavenly Father has helped me accomplish. I hope that you too can "See above the trees" and let Heavenly father help you have a bigger perspective than the here and now.

Good luck with your goals this year and remember to have quarterly or more frequently "check backs" to help you keep on track! Congratulations on making your first step to becoming a better YOU!
