Chile Earthquake 2010 and a Hawaii Tsunami Warning 2010

February 27, 2010 01:33 PM EST

Chile's 8.9 earthquake this morning on February 27, 2010 has caused a tsunami warning in Hawaii. The Chile earthquake isn't as devastating as the Haiti earthquake despite it being 1,000 times stronger because Chile has better infrastructure.

The Hawaii Tsunami warning 2010 is scaring many people in the island community because the 1960's tidal wave that happened after Chile's 9.0 earthquake killed over 60 people. Despite this, the area in Hawaii is preparing for the tidal wave and officials are doing all they can to prepare for the worst and minimize potential damage.

The Chile earthquake 2010 isn't something that happens all the time. It's very scary and because the quake registered at 8.8 on the Richter scale, aftershocks can be up to 7.8 - a very strong quake in and of itself.

All of these aftershocks and quakes cause tidal waves. All of the area in the Pacific region is watching to see what happens. Yesterday, Japan had a 7.0 quake off their shore, but no damage or landfall was spotted.

The tsunami created by the Chile earthquake 2010 has to travel 6,700 miles and could be 6 or 7 feet tall. It is expected to hit at around 4:20 EST PM
