Chile Earthquake 2010 and a Hawaii Tsunami Warning 2010

February 27, 2010 01:33 PM EST

Chile's 8.9 earthquake this morning on February 27, 2010 has caused a tsunami warning in Hawaii. The Chile earthquake isn't as devastating as the Haiti earthquake despite it being 1,000 times stronger because Chile has better infrastructure.

The Hawaii Tsunami warning 2010 is scaring many people in the island community because the 1960's tidal wave that happened after Chile's 9.0 earthquake killed over 60 people. Despite this, the area in Hawaii is preparing for the tidal wave and officials are doing all they can to prepare for the worst and minimize potential damage.

The Chile earthquake 2010 isn't something that happens all the time. It's very scary and because the quake registered at 8.8 on the Richter scale, aftershocks can be up to 7.8 - a very strong quake in and of itself.

All of these aftershocks and quakes cause tidal waves. All of the area in the Pacific region is watching to see what happens. Yesterday, Japan had a 7.0 quake off their shore, but no damage or landfall was spotted.

The tsunami created by the Chile earthquake 2010 has to travel 6,700 miles and could be 6 or 7 feet tall. It is expected to hit at around 4:20 EST PM

Seek Learning

“Our education must never stop. If it ends at the door of the classroom on graduation day, we will fail. And we will need the help of heaven to know which of the myriad things we could study we would most wisely learn. We cannot waste time entertaining ourselves when we have the chance to read or to listen to whatever will help us learn what is true and useful. Insatiable curiosity will be our hallmark.

“Sometimes we feel that we must choose between spiritual and secular learning. That is a false conflict for most of us, particularly for the young. … Too often we use many hours for fun and pleasure, saying, ‘I’m recharging my batteries.’ Those hours could be spent reading and studying to gain knowledge, skills, and culture.”

Teens in the Bible #1

Moses

Meaning: drawn (or Egyptian: mesu, “son;” hence Rameses, royal son)

The king's daughter “saw the child; and behold the child wept.” The princess sent Miriam, who was standing by, to fetch a nurse. She went and brought the mother of the child, to whom the princess said, “Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages.” Thus Jochebed's child, whom the princess called “Moses”, i.e., “Saved from the water" (Ex. 2:10), was ultimately restored to her.

As soon as the natural time for weaning the child had come, he was transferred from the humble abode of his father to the royal palace, where he was brought up as the adopted son of the princess, his mother probably accompanying him and caring still for him. He grew up amid all the grandeur and excitement of the Egyptian court, maintaining, however, probably a constant fellowship with his mother, which was of the highest importance as to his religious belief and his interest in his “brethren.” His education would doubtless be carefully attended to, and he would enjoy all the advantages of training both as to his body and his mind. He at length became “learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians" (Acts 7:22). Egypt had then two chief seats of learning, or universities, at one of which, probably that of Heliopolis, his education was completed. Moses, being now about twenty years of age, spent over twenty more before he came into prominence in Bible history. These twenty years were probably spent in military service. There is a tradition recorded by Josephus that he took a lead in the war which was then waged between Egypt and Ethiopia, in which he gained renown as a skilful general, and became “mighty in deeds" (Acts 7:22).

After the termination of the war in Ethiopia, Moses returned to the Egyptian court, where he might reasonably have expected to be loaded with honors and enriched with wealth. But “beneath the smooth current of his life hitherto, a life of alternate luxury at the court and comparative hardness in the camp and in the discharge of his military duties, there had lurked from childhood to youth, and from youth to manhood, a secret discontent, perhaps a secret ambition. Moses, amid all his Egyptian surroundings, had never forgotten, had never wished to forget, that he was a Hebrew.” He now resolved to make himself acquainted with the condition of his countrymen, and “went out unto his brethren, and looked upon their burdens" (Ex. 2:11). This tour of inspection revealed to him the cruel oppression and bondage under which they everywhere groaned, and could not fail to press on him the serious consideration of his duty regarding them. The time had arrived for his making common cause with them, that he might thereby help to break their yoke of bondage. He made his choice accordingly (Hebrews 11:25-27), assured that God would bless his resolution for the welfare of his people. He now left the palace of the king and took up his abode, probably in his father's house, as one of the Hebrew people who had for forty years been suffering cruel wrong at the hands of the Egyptians.

Divine Forgiveness

“I am amazed at the Savior’s encircling arms of mercy and love for the repentant, no matter how selfish the forsaken sin. I testify that the Savior is able and eager to forgive our sins. … What a marvelous privilege for each of us to turn away from our sins and to come unto Christ. Divine forgiveness is one of the sweetest fruits of the gospel, removing guilt and pain from our hearts and replacing them with joy and peace of conscience.”

Prepare

“Prepare yourself to be worthy to enter the temple, where you will make additional sacred covenants and receive sacred temple ordinances, including that of celestial marriage. This will require you to be virtuous.

“Youth is a defining time in which you can develop patterns of virtue that will help you take necessary steps toward eternal life.”

A Growing Testimony

“You cannot force spiritual things. A testimony is not thrust upon you; it grows. And a testimony is a testimony, and it should be respected, whether it is small or large. We become taller in our testimony like we grow in physical stature and hardly know it is happening, because it comes by growth.”

Are you feasting or starving?

This keeps coming up... maybe you should read Lehi's vision again???

12 FEB 2010

Hold Tight

“From Lehi’s vision we learn that we must take hold of this safety railing—this iron rod, found alongside our individual straight and narrow path—and hold tight until we reach our ultimate goal of eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Nephi promises that those who hold fast to the iron rod ‘would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction’ (1 Nephi 15:24).

“I invite you to read again the full accounts of this inspired vision. Study them, ponder them, and apply them to your daily life. In modern terms we might say we are invited to ‘get a grip.’ We must hold on tight to the iron rod and never let go.”

Love comes in all kinds

NEW MUSIC

Check out the new music!

VALENTINE'S DAY

Psalms 51:10- "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

Trivia Questions:
A. How many times does the word "heart" appear in all of our standard works?
B. How many times does "love" appear in the standard works? (keep reading to find out)

As we come up on Valentines Day, I assume that emotions are strong. Whether that is high in anticipation of what you and your boyfriend/girlfriend have planned for this weekend or very low because you feel like you have no one to share the day with, it is personal.

Valentine's Day is one of those difficult holiday's for ones who feel left out. Who feel like they are not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, etc. This day represents all that they feel they are lacking.

On the opposite side of the spectrum are those who are giddy with anticipation. Sometimes there is the notion that Valentine's Day is the day to try new things, push limits and "be in love." It can be a day that is later filled with regret.

Let's find a happy medium. If you do not have a boyfriend or girlfriend that is OK. Valentine's Day is about love. Not just loving one person but ALL people. Love for who you are! Love your family! Love for the Gospel! Love for life! Get a group together or stay with your family and enjoy the day!!

If you do have a boyfriend or girlfriend enjoy the special occasion. Have fun being together and getting to know each other, but be aware of your emotions and keep the fun "morally clean." Do activities with other people. Get dressed up and go on a group date to a fancy place (preferably on Saturday since the 14th is the Sabbath ;). It does not have to be expensive- (I at 17 had a magnificent date at home. My Mom made a choice of two main courses, side dishes, drinks and dessert. We had a family member be our server, we had a menu that our "waiter" took our orders from, and we used my Mom's fancy china. Then we went to a school play. It is a wonderful memory!)

Answers:
A. 1006
B. 368

If God sees fit to put the word heart and love into the scriptures almost 1,500 times, then obviously it is important!! Keep "clean hands and a pure heart" (Psalms 24:3-4) before God as you celebrate this Valentine's day. YOU ARE LOVED, so enjoy being loved and giving love this weekend.

Moral Discipline

“All of us experience temptations. So did the Savior, but He ‘gave no heed unto them’ (D&C 20:22). Similarly, we do not have to yield simply because a temptation surfaces. We may want to, but we don’t have to. …

“… Always and ever, there must be an exercise of discipline—moral discipline founded on faith in God the Father and the Son and what They can achieve with us through the atoning grace of Jesus Christ.”

Virtuous Youth

The Principle of Modesty

Some Latter-day Saints may feel that modesty is a tradition of the Church or that it has evolved from conservative, puritanical behavior. Modesty is not just cultural. Modesty is a gospel principle that applies to people of all cultures and ages. In fact, modesty is fundamental to being worthy of the Spirit. To be modest is to be humble, and being humble invites the Spirit to be with us.

Of course, modesty is not new. It was taught to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. “Unto Adam … and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21; see also Moses 4:27). Like Adam and Eve, we have been taught that our bodies are formed in the likeness of God and are therefore sacred.

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

“… The temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” (1 Corinthians 3:16–17).

Our bodies are the temples of our spirits. Additionally, our bodies are the means by which we can bring souls from the presence of God to their mortal state. When we recognize our bodies as the gifts they are and when we understand the missions they help us fulfill, we protect and honor them by how we act and dress.

In everyday living, immodest clothing such as short shorts, miniskirts, tight clothing, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and other revealing attire are not appropriate. Men and women—including young men and young women—should wear clothing that covers the shoulder and avoid clothing that is low cut in the front or back or revealing in any other manner. Tight pants, tight shirts, excessively baggy clothing, wrinkled apparel, and unkempt hair are not appropriate. All should avoid extremes in clothing, hairstyle, and other aspects of appearance. We should always be neat and clean, avoiding sloppiness or inappropriate casualness.1

Modesty is at the center of being pure and chaste, both in thought and deed. Thus, because it guides and influences our thoughts, behavior, and decisions, modesty is at the core of our character. Our clothing is more than just covering for our bodies; it reflects who we are and what we want to be, both here in mortality and in the eternities that will follow...

How we feel on the inside shows on the outside. We show love and respect for ourselves and others by our attitude, speech, and dress. We show love and respect for Church leaders and ward or branch members by speaking, dressing, and behaving in a manner that does not bring inappropriate attention to ourselves. We show love and respect for friends and associates when our language, dress, and behavior are not provocative or unduly casual. And we show love and respect to the Lord through humble dress and behavior. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35)... ~Robert D. Hales, “Modesty: Reverence for the Lord,” Ensign, Aug 2008, 34–39

President Spencer W. Kimball said:

“Another of the many things that lead to unchastity is immodesty. Today many young women and young men are smug in their knowledge of the facts of life. They think they know all the answers. They talk about sex as freely as they talk about cars and shows and clothes. And a spirit of immodesty has developed until nothing seems to be sacred.

“One contributing factor to immodesty and a breakdown of moral values is the modern dress. I am sure that the immodest clothes that are worn by some of our young women, and their mothers, contribute directly and indirectly to the immorality of this age. Even fathers sometimes encourage it. I wonder if our young sisters realize the temptation they are flaunting before young men when they leave their bodies partly uncovered. …

“I am positive that the clothes we wear can be a tremendous factor in the gradual breakdown of our love of virtue, our steadfastness in chastity” (Faith Precedes the Miracle [1972], 163, 168).
